Why Cloth Diapers?
Are you thinking about cloth diapering your baby? Cloth Diapers have clear advantages over disposables when it comes to money, solid waste, and chemical exposure.
BabyCenter.com estimates the cost of disposable diapers at $72 per month and the cost of disposable wipes at $20 per month. That comes out to a total of $1,104 per year! Cloth diapers vary quite a bit in cost, ranging from something in the neighborhood of $13 for a prefold and cover up to $25 for a premium pocket diaper. Every family’s cloth diapering needs and preferences are different. In my personal experience, three dozen prefolds, 6 covers, and 4 pocket diapers made a very ample diaper stash for one child. That was a total investment of about $320 for me, which is less than the cost of using disposable diapers for 4 months. While cloth diapering may require a greater upfront investment, it is easy to see that within a year that investment will have paid for itself. Families who use their diapers for a longer time or who are able to use their diapers with multiple children will see even greater savings.
The Environmental Protection Agency reports that US landfills take in 50 million disposable diapers per day, or 18 billion disposable diapers per year. In 1998 smoking cessation program use of electronic cigarettes, the last year in which this information was collected, that came out to 3.4 million tons of waste. The same report estimates that a disposable diaper takes 300 years to break down in a landfill. Simply put, because cloth diapers can be washed and re-used hundreds of times, they help keep a LOT of waste out of our landfills.
Fewer Chemicals on Baby’s Skin
Disposable diapers are made chiefly of plastic, wood pulp, and a super-absorbant gel called sodium polyacrylate. Many disposable diaper brands add bleach, perfumes, and dyes to those ingredients. These chemicals can be irritating to delicate baby skin and may cause allergic reactions and rashes.
Cloth diapers are now available in a huge variety of styles and materials. Families can explore and find the diapers that work best for them, including diapers made from organic, natural fibers and those made from highly absorbent microfiber. Whichever diaper styles a family may choose, they can feel comfortable knowing what is in their diapers and how their diapers impact baby’s health.
